Honour a Mother by Saving a Mother.

In Uganda, a mother plays a pivotal role in the survival of her children. Our team in Uganda recently met Isaac, a three-month old infant, who will sadly never know his mother, Rose. Like many women in her community, Rose gave birth without a skilled attendant. The delivery seemed to go well, but two days later her husband John said she complained of a backache, was unable to walk and had a high fever. He took Rose to the hospital, where she died two weeks later. Rose died of an infection, one of the leading causes of maternal deaths, and easily preventable.  Now the family is left with a hospital bill they can barely afford, let alone the cost of buying milk. His grandmothers are stepping in, but they can’t give him what his mother could.

STM graduate Dr. Ariho Boaz (right) knows the cost of care is a major reason mothers like Rose, deliver at home. So, he’s set up an “insurance” model program in his district in Eastern Uganda where community members contribute small amounts over time to prepare for obstetric emergencies. There is also a village health representative that contacts the health centre when a mother has delivered. Midwives are then sent out as “first responders” who go into the homes to care for the mother and child and can spot potential problems before they turn fatal.

Ugandan mothers need more gamechangers like STM graduate Dr. Boaz on the frontlines. Our graduates are helping prevent future tragedies; children like Isaac orphaned because their mother wasn’t able to access basic maternal care.
