David Musinguzi

David Musinguzi brings his knowledge and experience as a Community Development Worker to STM. He lives in a very rural part of North-eastern Uganda.

Alex R. Mujuni

Alex R. Mujuni studied social work before completing the Masters of Public Health Leadership and now works as an Administrator for TASO (The AIDS Support Organization of Uganda). He has met with local women’s group in his village where the women were surprised and deeply moved by his knowledge and commitment to women’s health and safe maternity. He continues to be recognized as a leader for safe motherhood in the field of HIV/AIDS.

Eliphaz Muhindi

Eliphaz Muhindi is a social worker in the far western part of Uganda (Kasese), an area that is often remote from services and assistance. Eliphaz has been sensitizing the community on the need to support expecting mothers during pregnancy and childbirth through the use of radio programs (sponsored by the local government). He has also mobilized the community to provide financial assistance to meet transportation costs for needy pregnant mothers. He has organized several safe motherhood committees within his community, helping the members themselves to play an important role in creating solutions to the many obstacles facing mothers in Uganda.

Christine K. Uwamahoro is trained as a social worker and is currently the director of guest relations at World Vision.

Florence T. Mpabulungi

Florence T. Mpabulungi has a Masters of Arts in Population Studies. She is the Monitoring and Evaluation agent for the Civil Society Fund. In this position, she is able to direct funding to organizations that promote reproductive health and prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. She is also involved with the special care unit at Mulago Hospital in Kampala where she works with expecting and new mothers. Her role at the hospital allows her to educate mothers about their health during and after pregnancy, their expectations during delivery and how to care for their babies.

Allen B. Nankunda is the executive director for Communication for Development Foundation, Uganda (CDFU). She specializes in health communications to raise AIDS awareness. Her research explored the use of traditional methods of family planning in Uganda.

Sophie Nantume

Sophie Nantume is the Program Officer for Counselling and Community Services at TASO (The AIDS Support Organization). Sophie is advocating for more safe motherhood training and services within TASO.


Rosette Tushemereirwe

Rosette Tushemereirwe works as an HIV/AIDS Capacity Building Officer for Integrated Community Based Initiative (ICBI). She graduated in October 2008 and now is regularly featured on the local radio to educate communities about safe motherhood, particularly the need for to prevent mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. She has trained a number of Community Health Workers about PMTCT safe motherhood. Finally, she regularly meets the district leaders to advocate for improved maternal health services in her community.

Stephen O. Opio

Stephen O. Opio is a community social worker for Action for Children. He has worked with a mothers’ union to spread awareness about the implications of gender-based violence on maternal health in Eastern Uganda. He is also training men and women about income-generation and food security to help women afford hospital visits and a healthy diet during pregnancy.

Patrick E. Rwahwire is a community worker in Wakiso district (Central Uganda). Since completing his STM studies in 2009, Patrick has been engaged in community training of safe motherhood.

Allen J. Were is the Deputy Chief of Party for Uganda IRS Program, Abt Associates Inc. Since his STM training, he is using his influence to become a safe motherhood ambassador in day-to-day work and activities. He is also emphasizing safe motherhood in anti-malaria campaigns implemented by NetMark.

Joshua Ainabyona is a program manager for NAVOC in Malawi. He is advocating initiatives for promoting safe motherhood and reducing maternal mortality, with the aim of reducing the number of children left orphans from unsafe pregnancies and childbirth.

Roseline has been working with mothers and fathers in her community, educating them about prevention of mother-to-child transmission of HIV/AIDS. Harriet has been advocating for the incorporation of safe motherhood interventions in the National Health Policy. She is an entrepreneur with a wealth of business and marketing experience.
