Students working in the field of health and medicine are on the front lines of caring for mothers and their babies. They are able to understand the medical needs of mothers and their babies and improve patient care.

Enid R. Mwebaza

Enid R. Mwebaza is the Assistant Commissioner for Nursing at Mulago hospital. Enid was recently promoted to this position and is now the second highest ranking nurse in the country. Her capacity to influence the important direction of nursing and midwifery in Uganda is profound. One of the biggest challenges in Uganda is the retention of health workers.

Dr. Alice K. Mutungi

Dr. Alice K. Mutungi was one of our first students from Kenya to graduate with STM training. She is a medical doctor at the Kenyatta hospital and works as a professor at the University of Nairobi. She is a strong advocate for safe motherhood and the need for a multi-disciplinary approach to save mothers’ lives.

Simon Peter Mayanja

Simon Peter Mayanja is the Assistant Coordinator in Nsambya Hospital’s Home Care Department. He conducted research on domestic violence among HIV patients in Uganda.

Dr. Jennifer A. Mugisha

Dr. Jennifer A. Mugisha is the president of the Association of Uganda Women Medical Doctors. She is now using her training to teach breastfeeding and nutrition to current STM students.

Catherine B. Odeke

As the principal nurse at Nakasero Blood Bank, Catherine B. Odeke researched the factors associated with regular voluntary blood donation among students. Catherine has been involved in a variety of STM-related activities, including pre-marriage counseling, encouraging pregnant mothers to attend antenatal and postnatal clinics and organizing safe motherhood programs at her church.

Margaret Kidega

Margaret Kidega is a nurse at Mulago School of Nursing and Midwifery (MSNM). She conducted research on emergency contraception among educational institutions of higher learning as part of her training with STM. Margaret used her training to organize voluntary counseling and testing for HIV/AIDS for mothers and fathers in her local hospital. She is also educating students at MSNM, helping improve the attendance of Antenatal Care Clinics and Deliveries where students are located.

Freda I. Amuron

Freda I. Amuron brings her experience as an HIV/AIDS worker to STM. She is working on including safe motherhood issues in work plans for community development officers in her district and educating people on the danger signs of pregnancy during AIDS training. She works in a very remote and somewhat dangerous area of Uganda (the Karamoja area of East Uganda).

Mary O. Tiko

Mary O. Tiko is a Deputy Tutor at Mulago Hospital in Uganda. Since her STM training began in 2007, Mary has been educating her students on postnatal care. She has also been educating school staff and students about adolescent pregnancies and safe motherhood.

Florence J. Isiko is the principal nursing officer for the District Health Officer’s office in Jinja (Eastern Uganda). Since her training began in 2008, Florence has been training midwives and educating district counsellors about maternal and children’s health.

Fredrick Kizito

Fredrick Kizito is a nutritionist at Nakaseke hospital in Central Uganda. Fredrick is working on developing a national policy for maternal health and nutrition through the Ministry of Health.

Bernard Mpairwe

Bernard Mpairwe is the Senior Research Counsellor at Mulago Hospital. Bernard began his training with STM in 2008, and has been giving health education on HIV/AIDS, family planning, antenatal care and birth preparedness to women attending clinics at Mulago hospital in Kampala. He is also training health workers in Eastern Uganda on emergency obstetric care.

Thomson Obong

Thomson Obong is the Senior Hospital Administrator at the Lira Regional Referral Hospital in Northern Uganda. He is using his STM training to ensure essential medicine and supplies are available for all pregnant mothers who go to the Lira Regional Referral Hospital.

Ronald M. Ocaatre

Ronald M. Ocaatre is a senior health educator in Arua (a district in Northern Uganda). Ronald has met with community leaders in his district to educate them on reproductive health. He has since helped increase funding from local government, train health workers and community volunteers on life-saving skills and participate in a radio program to educate the public on safe motherhood.

Maria Najjemba

Maria Najjemba is a nurse in the office of Distict Health Officer in Mayuge (South-eastern Uganda). As a leader in safe motherhood for her district, she organized the national celebrations for Safe Motherhood Day in Uganda. She has also trained midwives and health workers about safe motherhood and held meetings with Members of Parliament to advocate for safe motherhood initiatives in her district.
