From the time you had your morning coffee today,
until the same time tomorrow...at least 1,450 women in the developing
world will have died from preventable complications of pregnancy
and childbirth
Here are some facts you probably didn’t know
about these women and maternal mortality. Most women who die in
childbirth are from sub-Saharan Africa and Asia.
In the 20th century, pregnancy and childbirth killed
more than tuberculosis, suicide, traffic accidents and AIDS, combined.
One in four women who die during childbirth simply
bleed to death. This can often be prevented by a medication that
costs only 33 cents.
Half of all women in developing countries don't
have a skilled birth attendant at their delivery. Often, they have
only their mother-in-law for help.
The death of one mother often leaves a family of
orphans. These children, in turn, are more vulnerable to sickness
and death.
Save the Mothers Program is working to save some
of these 525,000 mothers who die from pregnancy complications by
establishing partnerships and building new, self-sustaining infrastructures
in developing countries.
